Di masa lalu, masyarakat Batak mengenal sebuah peti penyimpanan berharga yang disebut Huting-Huting. Huting-huting berfungsi sebagai tempat menyimpan benda-benda berharga milik raja atau keluarga bangsawan, seperti perhiasan, pusaka, hingga barang bernilai lainnya. Di rumah adat Batak tradisional, terdapat sebuah bagian penting yang disebut Sale-salean. Sale-salean merupakan rak atau ukiran berbentuk segi empat yang digantung di atas tungku perapian (tataring). Fungsinya sangat praktis sekaligus mencerminkan kearifan leluhur dalam memanfaatkan ruang di dalam rumah. Di tempat inilah masyarakat Batak dahulu mengeringkan ikan, daging, hasil pertanian, hingga kayu bakar.
